Discussing the Myst legacy and going into a new Age.

One of the most iconic franchises in videogame history and the series that pretty much legitimized the first-person puzzle/adventure sub-genre, is turning 25 this year.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, we’ve brought Myst III: Exile and Myst IV: Revelation to GOG – the two lost chapters of the saga that have been unavailable for purchase since forever.
Now we’re putting the cherry on top of this anniversary cake with a brief interview with Rand Miller, CEO of Cyan Worlds. Enjoy!

The Myst games have been widely praised for their intricate backstory and deliberate design, always consistent with their world’s internal logic. Did you have all that mapped out when you started developing the series, or was it an emergent process?

Rand: Myst was mapped out and deliberate. Every location, each age, the buildings and puzzles were all documented by my brother Robyn and me. Toward the middle of that process we started thinking about more details that would fill out the larger story that surrounded the events of Myst – and that’s where the D’ni story came from. We weren’t sure if the larger story would ever see the light of day, but as it began to take shape, it actually began to turn back and affect elements of the game. It was a very interesting recursive process that we still use to design games here at Cyan. We hope that it’s that internal logic that makes our stories seem more authentic and less like just a game.

Building quality is one thing but gaining this level of loyalty is quite another. What do you think is the element(s) that keeps the Myst brand so strong over the years, with fans showing their support consistently on your Kickstarter projects and beyond? What …read more

My big fat Greek empire.

Hegemony Gold: Wars of Ancient Greece and Hegemony III: Clash of the Ancients + its DLC pack The Eagle King are now available DRM-free on GOG.com, up to 75% off until July 6, 3PM UTC. Check out all the offers here.

It was the cradle of democracy but that hardly inoculated ancient Greece against the ravages of internal conflict. Take the role of Athens, Sparta, and Macedonia in Hegemony Gold, as the three states clash for supremacy using full-on siege, supply starvation, or even scorched earth tactics on a massive RTS scale.

Hegemony III: War of the Ancients takes you further back to the time where the Mediterranean was up in flames with Greeks, Gallic tribes and the newborn city of Rome trying to get an edge by any means necessary. Even more factions, units, and new features join the fray but things get even more complicated once Pyrrhus shows up in The Eagle King DLC.

Let me see your war face, son.

Playing at war often involves controlling dozens of soldiers, heavy artillery, perhaps some air forces for an extra strategic layer. Other times, all it takes to change the course of a conflict is a strong-willed band of hardened specialists that know how to get the job done. This Weekend Sale celebrates both approaches.

Fast-paced RTS action in blocky battlefields is what 8-Bit Armies is all about. Go solo or team up with friends to build a formidable stronghold before you go out and blow up the environment to pieces.

They don’t look like much but what they lack in fancy clothing and weapons they make up for in gumption, guile and grime. Recruit the most unflinching Battle Brothers and go show that low fantasy open world what you’re made of.

The Weekend Sale ends July 2nd, 10pm UTC.

Better not skip this.

Dead in Vinland, a survival adventure about a family of exiled Vikings building a new home for themselves, recently got updated to v1.1. There is a lot of cool stuff to appreciate here but most notably:

– A sidebar with sorting options
– Reworked leveling up, inventory filters, more keyboard shortcuts, plus a slew of other tweaks, fixes, and balance changes

They’re tiny, they’re toony, they’re all a little looney.

These are not the most well-known names out there but then again it’s not always the big hitters that steal the show – just look at the current World Cup. Besides, what they lack in brand power, they make up for in quirkiness, brilliant design, or bucketloads of charm. Check out some of these bad boys in our Weekly Sale:

The mechanically simple but generously entertaining Stories: The Path of Destinies, an action/adventure bursting with fascinating characters and storytelling twists, complimented by lovely art and music.

Filled with clever puzzles, heart-pounding action, and dystopian themes, The Fall & The Fall Part 2 tell a gripping story about an AI defying her protocols with unforeseen consequences.

The Weekly Sale ends July 2, 10 PM UTC.

The magnificent seven.

Sailors of the Deadfire archipelago, free DLC ho! The Scalawags Pack is now up for grabs and it’s looking pretty seaworthy.

Seven new crew members join the adventure, alongside six new ship upgrades and the Savage personality setting. Arrrr, that be quite fierce matey!

The game also got updated to v1.1.1, which scrapes off some pesky barnacles from its hull. Some concern the UI, some are about quests and companions, and others are universal, like fixing the issue with the client crashing when choosing Quit to Desktop.
