Toxikk is an arena style first person shooter that just recently came out on Steam via early access. It is advertised as paying homage to oldschool shooters as well as bringing us back to the roots of arena FPS’. I have a little over 10 hours of gameplay within Toxikk at this point and feel as though it’s time to give my first impressions of the game. There is only one map at the moment so I can only really comment on things having played that single map, but I will do my best to try and cover the major things I generally look for within an arena FPS. I won’t give the game an official final score or anything like that, until release, but I will give a score out of 10 to each category I believe is important.
Atmosphere/Graphics: I didn’t originally plan on speaking on this because there is currently only one map for us to play on. However, I feel as though there may be a few things to talk about here. One thing I noticed right off the bat is that Toxikk is trying to bring us more immersion within the world. This amounts to more visual ‘noise’ than other arena FPS such as Reflex and Quake. Personally, I am fine with this, and welcome beautiful worlds for us to play battle it out in. I know that 99 times out of 100 most competitive arena FPS players want as little visual noise as possible, and I think at some point we will get there with Toxikk. At the moment you can change a lot of the visuals, but online servers are locked so that everyone sees basically the same thing. The game engine uses PhysX technology so you see things like fog, ‘advanced’ explosions, etc. in game. I don’t have a problem running the game myself, however I have found quite a few topics with people asking how to get better performance out of the game. I will just assume that most computers will be able to run the game, once optimized.
Final Verdict: 9/10
